Promises of Victory
(Week 43 / 02)
Olubi Johnson

In our article this week I want us to examine some of the exceeding great and precious promises of the Word of God that promise us victory in all that we do.

Firstly, we need to know and understand that God is sovereign and rules in the affairs of men and, in particular, in our personal lives and circumstances. This means that there is nothing that can happen to you except God allows it. Now, this does not do away with your responsibility as a Christian to pray and seek God. In fact, if you are slothful and negligent in your spiritual responsibilities God has already given Satan permission to devour you (Heb. 2:3, 6:12, 1 Pet. 5: 8). This why in spite of the great promises in the Word of God so many Christians live defeated lives.

However, if you exercise yourself in honesty and humility of heart and are diligent in your prayer life, walk in the spirit and reading and study of God’s Word then these promises of certain victory will be fulfilled in your experience.

1 Corinthians 10:13 (KJV) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Here, God promises that we will not be tempted above what we can bear. This means God knows what you can bear at your present level of spiritual development and will not allow Satan to bring against you anything that will be above what you can overcome at your present level. This is a great encouragement for us. It also means that if a test, trial or difficulty has come into your life, God has already made enough provision for you to overcome it. God is an impartial judge between us and the devil as we contend with satanic temptations and trials: He will not allow Satan to cheat and at the same time if we do not use the resources He has made available to us He will allow Satan to have an inroad into our lives and wreck havoc. Therefore, it is necessary for you to make diligent use of the spiritual resources God makes available to you.

Philippians 2:13 (KJV) For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
These scriptures reveal that God is the one who is at work in us to will and to do of His good pleasure. In other words, if you are weak willed or indecisive God will strengthen your will and resolve. If you lack ability God will give you supernatural ability to do whatever it is you have to do to be victorious, which is His good pleasure since the Bible says ‘God always causes us to triumph in Christ’ and ‘whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world’. (2Cor.  2:14, 1 Jn. 5:4)

How then do we put God to work in us?

By choosing and exercising the fear of God, prayer in the spirit, obedience by the spirit, bible reading and study. If you keep these conditions the fulfillment of these promises of certain victory will be your portion.
